All, below is information about the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team's change to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.
2nd BRIGADE, 1st INFANTRY DIVISION COLORS MOVE TO FORT RILEY
FORT RILEY, Kansas - The Department of the Army announced yesterday that 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division's name and flags will move from Germany to Fort Riley in accordance with the Base Realignment and Closure 2005 law.
U.S. Army Europe will transfer unit designations, lineage, flags and other heraldic items belonging to 2nd Bde., 1st Inf. Div. and its subordinate units in Germany to U.S. Army Forces Command no later than March 15. Soldiers and equipment currently assigned to 2nd Bde.,1st Inf.
Div. will remain in place and activate as the 172nd Infantry Brigade effective March 16.
The 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division will inactivate. The Soldiers and equipment currently assigned there will be re-designated as 2nd Bde., 1st Inf. Div. in a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. March 28 on Cavalry Parade Field, here.
Although no deployment orders have been received, the unit, made up of approximately 3,800 Soldiers, has been training and is expected to deploy later this year. The unit has deployed twice previously and received the Valorous Unit Award for achievements during their last rotation to Iraq, which concluded in January 2006.
Chester, the brigade's American Bulldog mascot, will remain with the unit. His middle name is "Dagger."
